Tranquility Farm supports approximately 200 acres of mixed deciduous-conifer forest. Prior to European settlements began in the 1600’s the dense, old-growth forests covered most of St. Mary’s County, and were comprised primarily by oak (Quercus spp.), tulip poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera), beech (Fagus grandifolia) and the American chestnut (Castanea dentata).
Currently, efforts are underway to help return old-growth forest conditions, which include structural diversity (varying ages, species and sizes of trees), large downed wood, large standing dead trees, and species diversity. Old-growth forest conditions support a wide array of wildlife, improve water quality, filter pollutants, sequester CO2, support bio-diversity and rejuvenate/replenish soil horizons.
We seek to live in harmony with the multitude of ecosystems that exist throughout the property. Helping to improve and sustain native forest conditions for the benefit of a healthier planet is a primary goal of the property owners.
